Day 28 - Math Sheet, Thanksgiving Weekend (see you on Tuesday)

Up front I would just like to remind everyone of the author visit by ML Wade on Tuesday. There is an opportunity to buy his books and get them signed, so don't forget to bring your money if this is something that you would like to do.

Today began with language (silent reading, Hatchet, then Reading Response model). One thing that is so important for the students is to learn HOW to do something before they are asked to do it. Reading is a difficult subject as far as assessment goes and there are many creative ways to "mark" their reading but unfortuately, for those who are hesitant writers, it often involves writing. It is my goal to have multiple ways of assessing reading this year, which will sometimes include writing, but other times I will seek other avenues.
Having said that, today we learned how to do Reading Response Journals letters to the teacher!
The second half of the language period was dedicated to writing our business letters. The very cool thing about sending letters is, in the past, students often receive letters BACK!! This makes it very motivational.

Lego is a great company to write to because they are very good at writing back (sometimes with a little model). Last year sports stars and authors were sure to write back and even Wrigley's gum did too! Jerry Lee Lewis sent an autographed picture to one student last year. It is exciting and makes learning how to write letters properly, FUN!

During third and fourth period the students had art and drama. And fifth was Health.

Math was during sixth period and the kids put their developing knowledge of decimals to the test. It is still a tough concept for some and we'll continue to use it throughout the year so it is vital that they grasp the idea of tenths and hundredths as we progress throughout the year. We'll put these concepts into practice next week when we study money!

Have a wonderful and happy time together during Thanksgiving!!

See you on Tuesday.
