Day 133 - Science Project due on the 22nd, Math Fractions sheets 19-20, Language for Literature Circles

Today was a lovely day with the kids. They had library and gym which are always a nice change of scene. In gym we have been skipping in order to get the Jump Rope 4 Heart juices flowing. Boys and girls alike are challenging themselves to try skills that they have never tried before! Well done.

Our read aloud, Wonder is mesmerizing to say the least. I have a little bit of a fear of bawling while I'm reading it because it is quite touching in some spots and maddening in others.

Here is the synopsis and rating from Goodreads.com

Wonder

I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances?

R. J. Palacio has written a spare, warm, uplifting story that will have readers laughing one minute and wiping away tears the next. With wonderfully realistic family interactions (flawed, but loving), lively school scenes, and short chapters, Wonder is accessible to readers of all levels.

Science: The kids seem to be learning so much as they work on their science projects at home. They have told me many amazing things that they have learned from their research! These independent studies sometimes give the kids the time they need to dig deeper. Time they don't always have at school.
In class we talked about the nervous system and did a little test of our own to see our reaction times.

That about does it.

In math we focused on what the denominator represented in a fraction and even talked about improper and mixed fractions.

Have a great day.
